San Tan Valley Handyman Shows You How To Keep Your Drains Clear With These handy Tips.
Hi Readers!
Use My Guy your local San Tan Valley Handyman here. There is nothing more inconvenient than a clogged drain at
the wrong moment. Unfortunately it
usually happens at the worst time like those family gatherings or the
holidays. Why is this? You might
ask. I’ll tell you why. It’s times like these that our sinks, drains and toilets are getting the most use.
Whether it’s cooking large amounts of food and using the garbage
disposal in the sink to take care of the food waste or cousin Sally’s long hair
getting stuck in the tub drain it’s over-use like this that puts unnecessary stress
on the hosts. So here are three tips to
help save your sanity this holiday.
Zip It hair snare |
1)
Get a hair snare. This hand device is thin and barbed and can
fit in most sink and tub drains. It will
easily solve most hair clogs quickly and efficiently. If the hair snare doesn’t do the trick then
your next step is to remove the plug from the sink. Usually hair gets trapped on the pop up
stopper and the pivot rod. This is easy
to do but if your drains are very old can prove to be a hassle because of
natural calcium build-up that occurs over time.
Especially if the water in your neighborhood is very hard.

2)
Don’t run your food waste through the garbage
disposal. Little bits here and there are OK but if you are cooking for thirty people then it’s probably not a great idea to
dispose of all your food waste through the disposal. Designate a bucket or bowl for the waste and dispose
of it in the garbage can. If you do wind
up jamming the garbage disposal it is usually a pretty easy fix. First turn off the disposal and unplug it. Secondly find the Allen wrench that came with
the disposal. It should be under your
sink somewhere. Then all you have to do
is stick the wrench into the bottom of your disposal and turn it 360 degrees
four or five times and you should be good to go. Plug the disposal back in and turn it on to
ensure that it worked. If it didn’t repeat
the procedure a few more times before calling your local handy-man.
3)
Have some bacterial drain cleaner handy and use it monthly at least. This will be available at your local hardware
store or Home Depot. Most chemical drain
cleaners are not very effective and some can damage your pipes if you use them
often. Since most clogged pipes are
caused by organic matter the drain cleaners that use bacteria to clean out the
drains will be most effective. Just
follow the instructions on the package and wait for the magic to happen.

Now. If these tips
did not work for you then it is time to give your local handyman a call. If your drains are old and calcified then it
is a good idea to call a professional in to do the work. The reason for this being that old drains are
brittle and if you try to remove the pivot rod to remove your bathroom sink
drain a host of new and likely worse problems will occur. When
